Techniques and Processes: Adding Texture

  • Watercolour and Foil: For a textured background, paint watercolour (making the paper quite wet) onto paper. Crumple foil down on the paper and weigh down with a book. Allow the paper to dry in this way. You can also use bubble wrap or cling film.

  • Using a palette knife: Apply acrylic paint with a palette knife and spread thickly. Allow to dry.

  • Tissue paper and PVA glue: Using PVA glue, stick down two or three layers of tissue paper onto paper. Allow the tissue paper to slightly crumple. Coat a layer of PVA glue over the tissue paper. Once dry, you can draw or paint on top.

  •

  • Adding textured elements: Mix sand with PVA glue and paint onto surface; Apply Polyfilla to surface creating texture; Stick down small pieces of brown gummed tape to surface; Stick down small pieces of fabric. Once these textures are dry, you can paint over with acrylic paint.
